Saffron (Crocus Sativus) : Saffron crocus produces its deep purple flowers in the season of autumn and this most precious and most expensive spice is obtained from the flower of crocus with three red stigmas (Female) and two yellow (male) stamens.


A miracle of nature only red stigmas have the medicinal value with a distinctive aroma and a honey like taste. The flavour, aroma and colouring properties come from only red stigmas (filaments).

It counts nearly 500 plus stigmas of red filaments to weigh approximately 1gm of Saffron (only red stigmas). To obtain 500 gms of Dry Saffron requires 80,000 to 85,000 flowers, the equivalent of a football field’s area of cultivation and for 1 Kg requires nearly 1,60,000 to 1,70,000 flowers or two football fields area of cultivation.
